Jonathan Edward Bernthal entered the film industry as an American actor known for portraying ethically complex characters. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1976, he transitioned from stage theater to mainstream television and cinema. Early Education and Theater Training
Bernthal attended the Sidwell Friends School, graduating in 1995. After briefly attending Skidmore College, he followed the advice of his acting teacher Alma Becker to enroll at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia. He later attended Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at the American Repertory Theater, completing his graduate-level studies in 2002. Throughout his early career, he performed in over thirty regional and off-Broadway plays and co-founded the theater company Fovea Floods.

Following his move to Los Angeles in 2006, Bernthal secured his first regular television role on the CBS sitcom The Class. His filmography includes appearances in World Trade Center, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the 2014 war film Fury. He also appeared in Sicario, The Accountant, Baby Driver, and Ford v Ferrari. In 2022, he starred as Wayne Jenkins in the HBO miniseries We Own This City and joined the cast of the television series The Bear.
Superhero Portrayals and Recent Work
In 2016, Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle, known as The Punisher, in the second season of the Netflix series Daredevil. He subsequently led his own series titled The Punisher, which ran from 2017 to 2019. His involvement in the character continued with the 2025 revival series Daredevil: Born Again and the 2026 Disney+ special The Punisher: One Last Kill, which he co-wrote. In 2026, he made his Broadway debut in the play Dog Day Afternoon.
