Early Career and Real Sociedad
A product of the youth system at his hometown club Osasuna, Goikoetxea made his La Liga debut in October 1985 during a match against Celta de Vigo. Following this, he signed with Barcelona but was loaned for two years to Real Sociedad as part of a deal involving Txiki Begiristain. In 1990, Goikoetxea joined the Barcelona squad at Camp Nou. He was part of the group that secured four consecutive league titles. His contributions included a second-half appearance during the 1992 European Cup final against Sampdoria. He also scored the winning goal for the club in the European Super Cup final against Werder Bremen. His first season at the club involved 37 matches.
International Representation
Goikoetxea debuted for Spain on 12 September 1990 in a 3-0 victory against Brazil. He represented his country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, participating in every match. He recorded two goals during the tournament, netting against South Korea and Germany. In the latter match, his cross bypassed goalkeeper Bodo Illgner to secure a draw.
Later Years and Coaching
In 1994, he moved to Athletic Bilbao, where he recorded 112 competitive appearances. His playing career concluded after a return to Osasuna and a period with the Japanese club Yokohama Marinos alongside Julio Salinas.
