Born in 1955 in the Mount Darwin district, Joice Mujuru rose from a guerrilla fighter in the Rhodesian Bush War to become a central figure in Zimbabwean governance. Serving as Vice President from 2004 to 2014, she navigated complex party structures before her eventual dismissal and subsequent formation of a new political movement.
Military Origins
Known during the independence struggle by the nom-de-guerre Teurai Ropa Nhongo, Mujuru joined the ZANLA forces as a teenager. By age 21, she held the rank of camp commander at Chimoio in Mozambique. During this period, she gained prominence for her involvement in combat operations, including an alleged 1974 incident involving an aircraft. She married fellow commander Solomon Mujuru in 1977 and continued active military service while pregnant, ultimately transitioning to political leadership following the end of the conflict.

Upon Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, Mujuru was appointed as the nation's youngest cabinet minister, overseeing sports, youth, and recreation. During her subsequent tenure as Minister of Telecommunications, she became involved in significant regulatory disputes. In 1997, she issued a cellular license to a consortium that included her husband and President Robert Mugabe's nephew, a decision that faced legal challenges from independent network providers seeking market entry.
Vice Presidency and Succession
In September 2004, the ZANU-PF Women's League pushed for female representation in the vice-presidency. Sworn into the role on 6 December 2004, Mujuru became a primary contender to succeed Robert Mugabe, competing against Emmerson Mnangagwa. Her influence within the party's central committee and politburo solidified her position for a decade. However, her political standing shifted in 2014 following allegations of internal plotting, leading to her removal from the vice-presidency and expulsion from the party.
Land and Legal Disputes
The Mujuru family became associated with Alamein Farm, an operation located 45 miles south of Harare. The Zimbabwean Supreme Court ruled that the seizure of this property, which occurred as part of a national land reform program, was illegal. The estate has remained a point of contention in legal proceedings and international reporting regarding property rights and political influence in Zimbabwe.
