Jerzy Baksalary was a Polish mathematician who authored over 170 academic papers during a career dedicated to mathematical statistics and linear algebra. Born in Poznań in 1944, he spent his professional life contributing to the field of statistics and matrix theory while holding academic positions at institutions in Poznań and Zielona Góra until his death in 2005.
Academic Formation and Early Career
Baksalary completed his foundational studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He earned his PhD at the same institution in 1975, with a thesis focusing on linear statistical models supervised by Tadeusz Caliński. He later secured a Habilitation degree from the same university in 1984. Between 1969 and 1988, he served at the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, establishing a base for his subsequent research into algebraic structures within statistics.

In 1988, Baksalary transitioned to the Tadeusz Kotarbiński Pedagogical University in Zielona Góra, where he served as rector from 1990 to 1996. The President of Poland conferred the title of Professor of Mathematical Sciences upon him in 1990. During the 1989–1990 academic year, he spent time at the University of Tampere in Finland before continuing his long-term tenure at the University of Zielona Góra until his passing.
Contributions to Matrix Theory
Much of Baksalary's research involved the resolution of complex matrix equations. Working with Radosław Kala in 1979, he established the necessary conditions for solving the equation AX-YB=C. The following year, they expanded this analysis to the equation AXB+CYD=E. In 1981, his work on Gauss-Markov models provided formal conditions for the existence of best linear unbiased estimators. By 1995, in collaboration with Sujit Kumar Mitra, he introduced the left-star and right-star partial orderings for complex matrices.
Death and Academic Legacy
Baksalary died in Poznań on 8 March 2005 and was interred at the Junikowo Cemetery. His colleagues recognized his influence on the Poznań school of mathematical statistics and biometry. Posthumous tributes included memorial events held during the 14th International Workshop on Matrices and Statistics at Massey University in New Zealand and the Southern Ontario Matrices and Statistics Days at the University of Windsor in Canada.
