Jerzy Buzek secured his place in regional political history by becoming the first leader from the former Eastern Bloc to serve as President of the European Parliament. Scientific and Academic Foundations
Buzek graduated from the Silesian University of Technology in 1963 with a specialization in chemical engineering. He maintained a long-term commitment to academia, working as a scientist at the Chemical Engineering Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He achieved the rank of professor of technical science in 1997. His professional expertise has extended beyond Poland, including professional associations with the University of Cambridge.

During the 1980s, Buzek participated in the underground activities of the Solidarity trade union. He served as a chairman of several national general meetings for the movement. Following the political transition, he was elected to the Sejm. As a member of the Solidarity Electoral Action coalition, he authored key parts of the organization's economic platform.
Leadership as Prime Minister
From 1997 to 2001, Buzek served as the Prime Minister of Poland, the first Lutheran to hold the office. His administration implemented four primary national reforms: restructuring the educational and pension systems, reorganizing local government, and updating medical care. He remains the first Prime Minister of the 3rd Republic of Poland to complete a full term in office.
European Parliamentary Service
Buzek entered the European Parliament in 2004, representing the Silesian Voivodeship. In 2009, he was elected President of the European Parliament with a significant majority. His tenure, which lasted until 2012, focused on economic recovery and energy security. He served as a Member of the European Parliament across multiple terms, concluding his final mandate in 2024.
