Jerry Lewis

The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, a live event running annually from 1966 to 2009, served as a primary vehicle for the entertainer's long-term humanitarian efforts, ultimately raising $2.45 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. As a central figure in American entertainment for seven decades, Lewis shaped the landscape of comedy, film production, and television performance.

Early Career and Education

Born in 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, to parents active in show business, the future performer attended Irvington High School and the University of California, Los Angeles. His early career included work as a soda jerk and theater usher in New York City. By age 15, he developed a mime routine known as the Record Act, where he synchronized movements to phonograph recordings. After early struggles in burlesque, he refined his craft on the Borscht Belt circuit.

Partnership with Dean Martin

In 1945, Lewis met singer Dean Martin, and they debuted their collaborative act at the 500 Club in Atlantic City on July 25, 1946. As Martin and Lewis, the pair achieved national reach through nightclub performances, radio, and television, notably on The Colgate Comedy Hour. Between 1949 and 1956, they appeared in sixteen films, including My Friend Irma and Hollywood or Bust. The duo ceased their professional partnership in July 1956.

Filmmaking and Solo Work

Following the separation from Martin, Lewis expanded his career into filmmaking, acting in and directing thirty-five motion pictures between 1957 and 1984. His television footprint included fifty-two guest hosting appearances on The Tonight Show and a nightly series. A versatile performer, he also recorded numerous musical albums and performed standards from the Great American Songbook.

Honors and Recognition

Over his lifetime, Lewis received multiple accolades for his contributions to the arts and public service. These include the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2009, the Trustees Award in 2010, and an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia in 2013. He was a member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame and held the rank of Commander of the Legion of Honour. He also earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
