Jayaram Jayalalithaa served six terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, becoming a dominant force in Indian politics over a fourteen-year period. Before her political rise, she established herself as a versatile performer in the film industry, leveraging the classical dance training she received during her formative years in Madras to earn widespread recognition.
Early Education and Artistic Training
Born in 1948 in Melukote, Jayalalithaa spent her early childhood in Mysore before moving to Madras in 1958. She attended Bishop Cotton Girls' School and later enrolled at Stella Maris College. Her artistic development included intensive training in Western classical piano and multiple Indian dance forms, including Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Manipuri, and Kathak. Although she briefly pursued formal education, she transitioned into a professional acting career, which led to her receiving various Filmfare Awards South.

Following his death in 1987, she navigated internal factional disputes to solidify her control over the organization. She was eventually elected to the Rajya Sabha and, in 1991, she became the youngest Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at that time.
Governance and Tenure
Throughout her multiple tenures as Chief Minister, spanning from 1991 to 2016, she implemented extensive social-welfare initiatives. These included the introduction of state-subsidized canteens, water, salt, and cement. Her governance style was characterized by strong centralized authority and, during the 2016 assembly election, she achieved the distinction of being the first Tamil Nadu Chief Minister since 1984 to be re-elected to power.
Legal Challenges and Final Years
Her political life faced significant legal obstacles, including 28 corruption cases filed against her by opposition parties following the 1996 election.
