After completing her education at St. Joseph's Convent School in Bhopal and Loreto College, Kolkata, Bachchan refined her craft at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Her breakthrough arrived in 1971 with the title role in Guddi. Throughout the 1970s, she appeared in a series of critical and commercial successes including Uphaar, Koshish, and Bawarchi. Her screen partnership with Amitabh Bachchan defined much of the decade, featuring prominently in Zanjeer, Abhimaan, and the 1975 production Sholay. Following her marriage in 1973 and the birth of her children, Shweta and Abhishek, Bachchan shifted her focus toward family, accepting fewer film roles. She notably starred in Silsila in 1981 before entering a 17-year sabbatical from the industry. She resumed her acting career in 1998 with the independent drama Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa. Her resurgence in the early 2000s focused on character-driven maternal roles in high-profile productions such as Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..., and Kal Ho Naa Ho, resulting in three additional Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
Political Engagement
In 2004, Bachchan entered national politics, representing the Samajwadi Party as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
