Professional Background
Before his tenure as president, Duque pursued extensive academic and professional training. Duque entered Colombian legislative politics in 2014 when he was elected to the Senate of Colombia as a member of the Democratic Center Party. During his four-year term in the Senate, he authored four distinct pieces of legislation. These included Law 1822, which extended maternity leave to 18 weeks; Law 1831, requiring defibrillators in public facilities; Law 1809, regarding the use of severance payments for educational insurance; and Law 1834, known as the Orange Law, which provided a framework for the protection and development of cultural and creative industries.
Executive Presidency
Upon winning the 2018 presidential election, Duque centered his administration on themes of legality and entrepreneurship. His term included managing the country during the COVID-19 pandemic and handling the regional Venezuelan refugee crisis, throughout which his government maintained an open-door policy. Domestically, his tenure faced significant public opposition, including widespread protests in 2019 and 2020, as well as 2021 demonstrations directed against tax proposals. He concluded his presidency on 7 August 2022 and was succeeded by Gustavo Petro.
