Early Career and Education
Carlsson completed his education at Lund University, where he earned a degree in political science and met key figures within the Social Democratic movement. He later attended Northwestern University in Illinois as a Fulbright scholar in 1965. His professional development was nurtured by Prime Minister Tage Erlander, who included Carlsson in a cohort of young aides known as the boys.

Before his elevation to the premiership, Carlsson held a variety of government positions in Stockholm. His service included terms as Minister of Education from 1969 to 1973 and Minister for Housing between 1974 and 1976. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1982 to 1986 and briefly held the portfolio for environmental affairs.
First Premiership (1986–1991)
Upon taking office in 1986, Carlsson managed the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, which had significant environmental and economic impacts on Sweden. His administration navigated shifts in economic policy, attempting to manage a budget deficit alongside currency deregulation. In 1987, he became the first Swedish leader to visit a United States President at the White House since 1961.
Return to Power
After a period in opposition between 1991 and 1994, when Carl Bildt led a centre-right coalition, the Social Democrats returned to power. Carlsson served his second term as Prime Minister from 1994 to 1996. During this final phase of his leadership, his government focused on stabilizing the national currency and addressing the fiscal crisis.
