Early Career and Economic Tenure
Šimonytė began her professional trajectory in 1997 as an economist within the tax division of the Lithuanian Ministry of Finance. She held various roles within the department, including head of the direct taxation division and later chancellor. In 2009, she was appointed Minister of Finance during the second cabinet led by Andrius Kubilius. Tasked with managing the state economy following the Great Recession, she oversaw significant austerity measures until 2012. After leaving this post, she served as deputy chairperson of the Bank of Lithuania from 2013 to 2016 and held teaching positions at Vilnius University and ISM University of Management and Economics.

Returning to electoral politics in 2016, Šimonytė secured a seat in the Seimas representing the Antakalnis constituency in Vilnius. She won the seat in the first round of voting with over 51% of the electorate's support. During her time in parliament, she served on the audit committee and the European affairs committee. In 2020, she was appointed Prime Minister of Lithuania after her party and coalition partners secured a plurality of seats. She served in this capacity until 2024, continuing to hold her seat in the Seimas.
Presidential Campaigns
Šimonytė contested the presidency of Lithuania twice, in 2019 and 2024, both times as the Homeland Union candidate. In the 2019 election, she finished first in the initial round of voting on 12 May but was defeated by Gitanas Nausėda in the runoff. She campaigned again in 2024, advancing to the second round before concluding the contest with 24% of the vote.
