Following a hiatus from the 1996 Summer Olympics and a victory in the 50 metre freestyle at the 1999 European Championships, de Bruijn achieved a career peak in Sydney. She won gold in the 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle, and 100 metre butterfly, establishing world records in all three. A silver medal with the 4x100 metre freestyle relay team completed her performance, earning her the nickname "Invincible Inky." Swimming World magazine recognized her as the Female World Swimmer of the Year in both 2000 and 2001.
World Championship and Athens Success
De Bruijn continued her success at the 2001 World Championships by securing three titles. She successfully defended her 50 metre freestyle and butterfly titles at the 2003 World Championships. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she defended her 50 metre freestyle gold, secured silver in the 100 metre freestyle, and earned bronze medals in both the 100 metre butterfly and the 4x100 metre relay. This achievement established her as the oldest individual Olympic champion in the history of the sport.
Retirement and Post-Athletic Pursuits
Following her retirement from competitive swimming in March 2007, de Bruijn shifted her focus toward other public roles. She previously trained in Portland, Oregon, but currently resides in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
