Tro och vetande, published in 1949, triggered one of the most extensive cultural debates in Swedish history by challenging the established role of the Church of Sweden. Ingemar Hedenius, a central figure in this intellectual movement, spent his career examining the intersection of rational thought and religious tradition from his position at Uppsala University.
Academic Foundation
Born in Stockholm on 5 April 1908 to Israel and Anna Hedenius, Ingemar grew up in a household where religion was a prominent feature. He attended the Norra Latin school before enrolling at Uppsala University. In 1936, he completed his doctoral thesis, Sensationalism and theology in Berkeley's philosophy, focusing on the work of George Berkeley. He later served as the Professor of Practical Philosophy at Uppsala University from 1947 until 1973.

Influenced by Bertrand Russell and the principles of analytic philosophy, Hedenius argued that theology failed to meet basic rational standards. In his seminal 1949 book, he proposed three postulates to evaluate truth claims: the religion-psychology postulate, the language-theory postulate, and the logic postulate. He concluded that because theology frequently relied on metaphysical assumptions and internal contradictions, such as the problem of evil, it could not be classified as objective knowledge. Instead, he labeled such beliefs as quasi-knowledge and advocated for the separation of religious studies from theological departments.
Cultural Influence and Later Years
Between 1957 and 1960, Hedenius acted as a publisher for the magazine Kulturkontakt, which was associated with the Congress of Cultural Freedom. Beyond his philosophical output, which included titles like Om rätt och moral and Helvetesläran, he was known for his musical interests, specifically playing the flute in public. In 1979, the Faculty of Theology at Uppsala University awarded him an honorary doctorate. He died on 30 April 1982 in Helga Trefaldighet and is buried at Uppsala Old Cemetery.
