Illya Zabarnyi: The Ukrainian in Paris
In August 2025, Paris Saint-Germain paid a reported €63 million for a twenty-two-year-old centre-back and, in doing so, signed the first Ukrainian in the club's history. The transfer also placed him in a dressing room that already contained a Russian goalkeeper. Zabarnyi has since had to describe, in public, exactly how a professional handles that — a question no coaching manual covers.
Kyiv, and the Dynamo Production Line
Illya Borysovych Zabarnyi — the name is also transliterated Illia — was born on 1 September 2002 in Kyiv. He entered Dynamo Kyiv's academy in 2015 and spent four years there, his first trainers being Serhiy Bezhenar and Artem Yashkin. He was promoted to the senior squad in July 2019, at sixteen, and made his Ukrainian Premier League debut on 11 September 2020 against Desna Chernihiv. He stands 1.89 metres, which in his case is less relevant than what he does with the height.
The Youngest Man in the Back Line
Over four seasons at Dynamo he made eighty-five appearances and scored once, and the honours he collected were the kind that mark a player out early: "Golden Talent of Ukraine" in both 2020 and 2021 in the under-19 category, and Ukrainian Premier League Player of the Month for April 2021. By then he was already a national-team defender — he had debuted for Ukraine on 7 October 2020, aged eighteen, in a friendly against France.
Bournemouth
On 31 January 2023 he signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Bournemouth, debuting on 4 April in a 2–0 defeat to Brighton. It took him almost a year to score — 13 March 2024, in a 4–3 win over Luton Town — but the numbers around him moved faster than the numbers on him. He was voted Bournemouth's Supporters' Player of the Season for 2023–24, extended his contract to 2029 that July, and made thirty-six appearances in the campaign that carried Bournemouth to ninth in the Premier League, a finish well beyond the club's usual ambitions. He left with eighty-six competitive appearances and a reputation, as Al Jazeera summarised it, for aggressive defending and aerial dominance.
Paris
PSG completed the signing on 12 August 2025 on a five-year deal. "I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain, the best club in the world, with the best project," Zabarnyi said. "I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I'm looking forward to making my debut." Nasser Al-Khelaifi called him "a talented international player" who "will make a major contribution to everything that we are building long-term." He debuted on 17 August against Nantes, scored his first goal on 27 September against Auxerre, and by February 2026 had made twenty-seven appearances for the Ligue 1 champions.
The Teammate He Will Not Befriend
PSG's goalkeeper Matvey Safonov is Russian, and Zabarnyi's first public comments on the arrangement drew a line with no ambiguity in it. "In my country, a full-scale war has been raging for four years," he said. "The Russians are aggressors who are trying in vain to destroy the freedom and independence of Ukraine." He stated he has no personal relations with Russians and supports the complete isolation of Russian football from the world game. He also said he would interact with Safonov professionally in training and fulfil his obligations towards the club. It is a distinction — between professional conduct and personal endorsement — that most players are never asked to articulate, and he articulated it precisely.
The National Team
Zabarnyi has fifty-five caps and three goals for Ukraine, having scored against North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifying, Belgium in the Nations League play-offs, and Canada at the 2025 Canadian Shield. He played at Euro 2020 — the tournament at which Ukraine reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their history — and was called up again for Euro 2024 in May of that year. He was eighteen when he first played for the senior side and had barely turned nineteen during that quarter-final run.
He has been a fixture in that defence ever since, through the years in which representing Ukraine stopped being an ordinary job and became something closer to a public duty. Off the pitch he married his long-time girlfriend, Angelina, in 2023, the same year he moved to England.
Why Illya Is Called a Genius
The word is premature, and the honest thing is to say so. Zabarnyi is twenty-three. He has won no major individual award beyond Ukrainian youth prizes and a club supporters' vote. What he has, and what has persuaded two selection committees — Bournemouth's recruitment department and PSG's — to bet heavily on him, is precocity of judgement rather than of athleticism.
The skill is positional and it is physical, not intellectual, and it deserves specifying. A centre-back's core problem is anticipation under incomplete information: when to step up and compress the space, when to drop and concede it, when to attack a cross and when to hold the line and let it come. Get it wrong and the error is the last event of the sequence, visible to everyone. Zabarnyi has been making those decisions in senior football since he was eighteen, in a national team, at a European Championship, and now in a Champions League-winning side — and the recurring descriptions of him are aggressive defending and aerial dominance, which is to say he wins the duels he chooses to enter and chooses well.
The counter-case is simply the calendar. One season at PSG, one goal, twenty-seven appearances. No Ballon d'Or shortlist, no defender-of-the-year vote. A significant part of his current prominence rests on the fee, on being PSG's first Ukrainian, and on a political situation he did not create. He may become one of Europe's best defenders. Nothing yet proves he is one.
Legacy
Too early for a legacy, but not too early for a shape. Zabarnyi is the first Ukrainian to play for PSG, a national-team regular since eighteen, and a player who has grown up entirely inside the years of the full-scale war — which has made him, without asking, a representative figure. His careful public sentence about Safonov may prove more quoted than any tackle he makes. He has until roughly 2035 to change that.
