Ilir Meta, born in 1969 in Çorovodë, emerged from the student movement of the early 1990s to become a central figure in Albanian politics. His career encompasses over two decades of parliamentary service and high-level executive appointments, defined by his transitions between major political alliances and his tenure as the nation's head of state.
Parliamentary Ascent
First elected to the Parliament of Albania in 1992, Meta maintained a seat for twenty-five years until 2017. His early career involved rapid advancement within the Socialist Party of Albania. He served in several roles throughout the 1990s before assuming the premiership in 1999, where he focused on stabilizing the government following the Kosovo War and navigating initial European integration efforts.

In 2004, Meta broke with the Socialist Party to establish the Socialist Movement for Integration. This party functioned as a third-party force in the Albanian landscape. By securing leverage after the 2009 and 2013 elections, he enabled the formation of governing coalitions, first partnering with Sali Berisha’s Democratic Party and later aligning with Edi Rama’s Socialist Party.
Presidency and Legal Challenges
Meta served as President of Albania from 2017 to 2022. His tenure was marked by institutional disagreements with the administration. Following his departure from the presidency, he resumed leadership of his political organization, now known as the Freedom Party. In October 2024, he was arrested following an investigation into allegations including money laundering and corruption, with formal charges filed in May 2025.
