A collection of original illustrations was gifted to Estonia in 2004 by the artist Ilon Wikland, marking a significant repatriation of her creative output. Born in Tartu in 1930, she moved from her home country to Sweden as a refugee in 1944, eventually establishing herself as a prominent visual artist and illustrator working out of Stockholm.
Early Life and Migration
Raised in the coastal town of Haapsalu, Lääne County, Wikland lived in Estonia during her formative years. In 1944, the ongoing second Soviet occupation forced her to leave her home. She traveled to Sweden with the family of a school peer, arriving as a refugee to begin her career in a new country.

In 1953, Wikland sought employment as an illustrator at the publishing house Rabén & Sjögren. During her interview with Astrid Lindgren, she was tasked with creating a sample drawing for the manuscript of Mio, My Son. This test successfully secured her role, beginning a long-term partnership in which she illustrated more of Lindgren's books than any other artist.
Illustrative Works
Her bibliography includes numerous titles such as The Brothers Lionheart, Ronia the Robber's Daughter, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, and The Children on Troublemaker Street. Beyond these collaborations, she provided illustrations for works by other authors, including The Borrowers, Brenda Helps Grandmother, and The Dragon with Red Eyes. Her artistic practice frequently draws from both her own internal perspective and observations of reality.
Public Legacy
The government of Sweden presented her with the Illis quorum award in 2002, acknowledging her capacity to visualize characters and environments from literary texts. In 2009, Haapsalu opened Ilon's Wonderland, a facility functioning as a theme center and gallery dedicated to her work. She also holds the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class.
