A 15-kilometre classic victory at the 2014 under-23 World Championships in Val di Fiemme served as the international breakthrough for Iivo Niskanen. Since that debut, the Oulu-born athlete has established himself as a central figure in cross-country skiing, securing multiple Olympic gold medals and becoming a perennial contender in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup circuit.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Niskanen made his World Cup debut on 12 March 2011 during a 20 km skiathlon in Lahti, Finland. By January 2014, he reached the top of the podium at the under-23 World Championships. Later that year, he participated in the 2014 Winter Olympics, where he secured a gold medal in the men's team sprint alongside Sami Jauhojärvi. This success led to both men sharing the Finnish Sports Personality of the Year award.

Dominance in the 2021-22 Season
After a challenging 2020–21 campaign, Niskanen returned to peak performance in 2021–22. He became the first Finnish male to reach the podium at the Tour de Ski and subsequently captured the Distance World Cup title. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, he earned three medals: gold in the 15 km classical, silver in the classical team sprint with Joni Mäki, and bronze in the 30 km skiathlon.
