Academic and Professional Pursuits
Born in 1991 in Zubrets, Kostenko was raised by his grandparents. He pursued higher education in Western Ukraine, enrolling at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. By 2013, he completed his bachelor's degree and transitioned into a graduate program focused on geography. His academic research concentrated on the development of the tourism industry within Buchach. Concurrently, he worked as a journalist for the online sports publication Sportanalitika.

In February 2014, Kostenko traveled to Kyiv to join the Euromaidan demonstrations, which emerged following the Ukrainian government's decision to halt progress toward European Union integration. Working alongside associates from Lviv, he participated in the construction of barricades intended to secure protester positions. The situation escalated rapidly on 19 February 2014, when snipers began targeting participants. On 20 February 2014, his body was discovered near the October Palace with fatal wounds caused by gunfire.
Posthumous Recognition
Following his death, Kostenko received significant national and international honors. In November 2014, he was granted the title of Hero of Ukraine, receiving the Order of the Gold Star. The global Wikipedia community named him the 2014 Wikimedian of the Year, an award presented by founder Jimmy Wales to his sister, Inna, in Kyiv. Additionally, his academic institution renamed an auditorium in his honour, and his former high school, Saint Josaphat Buchatskiy, installed a commemorative plaque.
