Ignacio Bolívar is remembered in natural history for work that changed what the next generation was able to take for granted.
Ignacio Bolívar was born at Madrid in 1850. His recorded nationality is Spain. He was educated at Universidad Central.
Professional research and institutional work
The nineteenth century professionalised science. Laboratories acquired budgets, universities acquired chairs, and for the first time a person could be a scientist by occupation rather than by inclination.

Scientific focus and academic recognition
Like many of his contemporaries, Ignacio Bolívar moved between natural history, zoology and entomology without regarding the boundaries as real.
The Spain setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.
His work was formally recognised with the Echegaray Medal, honorary doctorate and Honorary Doctorate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Legacy and death
The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.
Death came in 1944, at 94. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of natural history, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
