Ten thousand euros provided the starting capital for Rainbow SpA in 1995, an Italian animation studio founded by Iginio Straffi. Straffi, a native of Gualdo, transitioned from a career in comic book illustration and screenwriting into the role of a producer and director, eventually establishing a significant international footprint in the animation and entertainment industry.
Early Career and Comic Illustration
Born in 1965, Straffi began drawing comic stories at age seven. While studying at the University of Macerata, he continued to develop his artistic skills. His professional breakthrough arrived in 1985 with a story published in Tilt. By the 1990s, he worked as a comic book illustrator for Sergio Bonelli Editore, contributing to the Nick Raider series. Despite his success in comics, he sought opportunities in animation, eventually moving to France to work at the Telcima studio on projects such as Valérian.

After gaining experience in production processes abroad, Straffi returned to Italy to launch Rainbow SpA in 1995 alongside Lamberto Pigini and Giuseppe Casali. The studio initially provided creative services for other firms before developing original properties. In 2004, the studio released Winx Club, which premiered on Italy's Rai 2. The series achieved significant ratings, holding an average audience share of 17 percent, and eventually became a global franchise.
International Partnership and Live Action
In February 2011, Viacom acquired a 30 percent stake in Rainbow, a deal characterized as the studio's most important agreement. This partnership facilitated worldwide distribution for Rainbow productions through Paramount and Nickelodeon. Straffi regained full ownership of the studio in January 2023. By 2019, he began transitioning his professional focus from animation toward live-action projects, including the production of Club 57 and the series Fate: The Winx Saga.
