Hun Sen solidified his influence in Cambodia by serving as the country's longest-serving head of government, holding the position of Prime Minister between 1985 and 2023. Born Hun Bunal in 1952, he evolved from a Khmer Rouge battalion commander into the central figure of the Cambodian People's Party, managing the state through decades of shifting geopolitical alliances and internal conflict.
Early life and political emergence
Born in the Peam Kaoh Sna Commune, Hun Sen was the third of six children. He moved to Phnom Penh at age 13 to attend a monastic school. In 1970, he joined the Khmer Rouge insurgency following the removal of Norodom Sihanouk. During his military service, he changed his name from Hun Bunal to Hun Samrach and finally to Hun Sen in 1972. He sustained a permanent eye injury while fighting during the fall of Phnom Penh.

By 1977, Hun Sen defected from the Khmer Rouge regime amid internal purges and fled to Vietnam. He subsequently joined Vietnamese forces during the Cambodian–Vietnamese War. In 1979, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in the government installed by Vietnam, becoming the youngest foreign minister in the world at age 26.
Consolidation of power
In January 1985, the National Assembly appointed Hun Sen as Prime Minister following the death of Chan Sy. After the 1993 elections, he served as Second Prime Minister in a coalition government with FUNCINPEC. He orchestrated a coup d'état in 1997, removing Norodom Ranariddh, and thereafter secured consecutive election victories until his resignation in 2023. He remains active in state politics, assuming the role of President of the Senate in 2024.
