The first issue of the 2014 version of The Amazing Spider-Man, illustrated by Humberto Ramos, holds the distinction of being the best-selling comic of the 21st century. Born in Mexico in 1970, Ramos has built a prolific career as a penciller, inker, and painter, spanning several decades of major superhero titles for both Marvel and DC Comics.
Early Career and DC Comics
Ramos began his professional career in 1989 at Kaboom Cómics. By 1994, he contributed to various projects including Hardware, Steel, and Static. He gained significant prominence in 1995 when he was hired by DC Comics to provide interior artwork for the Flash spin-off Impulse. Written by Mark Waid, the series tracked the life of Bart Allen, the grandson of Barry Allen.

In 1998, Ramos co-founded the Cliffhanger imprint alongside J. Scott Campbell and Joe Madureira. Operating under Jim Lee's Wildstorm division of Image Comics, the imprint allowed the artists to produce creator-owned work. Ramos produced the 24-issue series Crimson and the mystery title Out There. This period also marked his entry into Spider-Man illustration, starting with covers for Peter Parker: Spider-Man in 2001.
Major Marvel Contributions
Following the conclusion of his Cliffhanger contracts in 2003, Ramos shifted his focus toward Marvel Comics. He collaborated with writer Paul Jenkins on The Spectacular Spider-Man and later worked on titles including Wolverine and the X-Men franchise. His output also extended to international markets, notably the three-volume space opera Kookaburra K, published by the French firm Soleil Productions between 2006 and 2010.
Recent Projects and Accolades
Throughout the 2010s, Ramos maintained a steady partnership with writer Dan Slott on various iterations of The Amazing Spider-Man. In 2016, he co-created The Champions alongside writer Mark Waid. For his contributions to the medium, Ramos received the Inkpot Award in 2015, and he remains active in the field as a painter and illustrator.
