Early Education and Engineering Background
Born in 1952 in Baghdad, al-Abadi attended Markaziyah High School before pursuing technical studies. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Technology in Baghdad in 1975. Later, he completed a PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Manchester in 1980. This technical background complemented his long-term involvement in organized political activities.
Opposition to the Ba'athist Regime
Al-Abadi joined the Dawa Party in 1967 and became an executive leader by 1979. His opposition to the Ba'ath Party resulted in significant personal hardship for his family. In 1983, the Iraqi government confiscated his passport due to his activities. Several of his brothers faced imprisonment or death during the early 1980s for their associations with the party.
