Gregg Berhalter is the first person in United States history to participate in the FIFA World Cup as both a professional player and a head coach. Early Development and European Tenure
Born in 1973 in Englewood, New Jersey, Berhalter attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School before playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He departed the University of North Carolina after his junior year, beginning a 15-year career in Europe. Starting with the Dutch club Zwolle in 1994, he played for Sparta Rotterdam and Cambuur, followed by a stint with Crystal Palace in England. He later joined the German Bundesliga, captaining Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich.

In April 2009, Berhalter signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy, his first professional contract in the United States. His presence immediately bolstered the defense, as the team halved its goals-against record. He played a pivotal role in the 2009 MLS Cup run and helped secure the MLS Supporters Shield and the 2011 MLS Cup before his retirement from professional play at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
International Coaching Career
Berhalter began his coaching career as an assistant with the LA Galaxy before managing the Swedish club Hammarby. He later served as sporting director and head coach of the Columbus Crew, where he guided the team to four playoff appearances in five years. Appointed head coach of the U.S. national team in 2018, he won the inaugural Nations League title and the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He emphasized a younger roster, integrating players like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie, before his departure in 2024.
