BioWare was incorporated on 1 February 1995 within a basement in Edmonton, Alberta, representing the formal transition of Greg Zeschuk from medical professional to software developer. Along with Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip, Zeschuk utilized his background in medical simulation to pivot toward commercial game design, eventually shaping the trajectory of the Canadian video game industry.
Medical Origins and Software Development
Zeschuk graduated from the University of Alberta in 1992 with a medical degree. His initial software work involved medical simulation programs developed during residency, including the Acid-Base Simulator. Following a research associate role in the Division of Studies in Medical Education and subsequent training periods in Canada and the US, he focused on the Gastroenterology Patient Simulator. This project served as the catalyst for his exit from medicine, as he and his colleagues identified a deeper professional interest in video game creation.

With an initial investment of $100,000 pooled by the three founders, the team established BioWare. Zeschuk maintained a leadership role within the company for nearly two decades, overseeing operations until his departure in 2012. Throughout his tenure, he was recognized for his contributions to the field, earning a place on the IGN list of top 100 game creators alongside Ray Muzyka in 2009.
Transition to Craft Brewing
Following his retirement from game development in September 2012, Zeschuk shifted his focus to the craft beer sector. He produced a web-based interview series titled The Beer Diaries in 2013. in 2017, located within his restaurant, Biera, in Edmonton. In 2022, he expanded these operations by opening The Monolith, a site dedicated to wild and mixed culture beer. The following year, products from The Monolith earned gold and bronze medals in the Belgian Sour Beer category at the World Beer Cup.
Additional Professional Interests
Beyond his work in brewing and games, Zeschuk serves as the chairman of the board for Biba Ventures, a company based in Vancouver that develops smart playground technology. His career has been marked by formal recognition; he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Game Developers Choice Awards and was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada on 27 December 2018.
