The bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris solidified Gregoria Mariska Tunjung as a significant figure in Indonesian badminton. Born on 11 August 1999 in Wonogiri, she progressed through the national sports infrastructure to become the first Indonesian women’s singles player to reach the world's top ten rankings since 2008.
Early Development and Junior Success
Tunjung began her formal training at the PB Mutiara Cardinal club in Bandung, West Java. She joined the Indonesian national squad in 2013. Her transition to the senior circuit included a 2018 victory at the Finnish Open. While she competed in the Tokyo Olympics, her results during subsequent BWF World Tour events remained inconsistent, marked by several early exits. In 2022, she broke new ground by becoming the first Indonesian woman to qualify for the BWF World Tour Finals after a runner-up finish at the Australian Open.
Achieving Elite Rankings
The 2023 season marked a shift in her competitive consistency. She claimed her first BWF World Tour title at the Spain Masters by defeating P. V. Sindhu, a win that propelled her into the top ten world rankings. Later that year, she achieved a Super 500 victory at the Kumamoto Masters, establishing her as the first Indonesian woman to win a title at that level since 2007.
International Team and Olympic Contributions
Tunjung has served as a core member of the Indonesian national team. She captained the squad to victory at the 2022 Asia Team Championships and contributed to the team's historic 2024 Uber Cup final appearance. Her Olympic career culminated in Paris, where she was awarded a bronze medal following the cancellation of the match caused by an injury to her opponent.
