By 1976, he was competing in professional tournaments such as the South Coast Open and the West Lakes Classic, where he secured his first major win by a five-stroke margin. He joined the European Tour the following year, winning the Martini International in Scotland. By 1982, he ranked as the leading money winner on the European Tour.

In 1984, Norman recorded his first PGA Tour victory at the Kemper Open. He gained global visibility at that year's U.S. Open, where a 45-foot putt forced a playoff against Fuzzy Zoeller. His most notable major victories occurred at The Open Championship in 1986 and 1993.
