Greg Abbott

Gregory Wayne Abbott began his tenure as the 48th governor of Texas in 2015, marking the start of a political career that has since evolved into the longest-serving incumbent governorship in the United States. His professional background spans three decades of service as a judge, lawyer, and attorney general, consistently operating within the framework of Texas state politics.

Early Development and Legal Beginnings

Born in Wichita Falls in 1957, Abbott spent his formative years moving between Longview and Duncanville. He attended Duncanville High School before enrolling at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1981. He completed his formal education at Vanderbilt University Law School, receiving a Juris Doctor in 1984. Following graduation, he entered private practice at Butler and Binion, LLP, serving there until 1992.

Judicial Appointments and Early Elections

Abbott initiated his judicial career as a state trial judge in the 129th District Court in Houston. In 1995, Governor George W. Bush appointed him to the Texas Supreme Court. He secured a full term on the court in 1998, capturing 60% of the vote. He served as a justice until 2001, when he transitioned back into private practice at Bracewell & Giuliani.

Attorney General Tenure

In 2002, Abbott was elected the 50th attorney general of Texas, defeating Kirk Watson. He held this position until 2015, establishing a record for the longest term in the office's history. His tenure was characterized by frequent litigation against federal authorities, including the administration of Barack Obama, covering issues ranging from the Affordable Care Act to environmental regulations. He also oversaw the defense of the state's displays of the Ten Commandments and argued in favor of the state's same-sex marriage ban.

Gubernatorial Initiatives

Since assuming the governorship in 2015, Abbott has directed state policy through various legislative and executive actions. He focused on conservative mandates, including restrictive abortion laws and expanded law enforcement funding. Following the February 2021 winter storm, he facilitated reforms for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. His administration also launched Operation Lone Star to address immigration concerns and managed the state response to the COVID-19 pandemic by prohibiting mask and vaccine mandates.
