Early Development and West Ham United
Known initially as Glen Stephens, he was raised by his mother in Dartford, Kent, after the separation of his parents. He attended Temple Hill Primary School and Leigh CTC School. Johnson joined the West Ham United youth system under manager Tony Carr at age nine. By 2000, he became a first-year scholar, signing professional terms in 2001. After a brief loan spell at Millwall during the 2002-03 season, he debuted for West Ham in January 2003. Despite securing a new contract that March, the club suffered relegation in May, leading to his departure.
Success and Transition at Chelsea
In July 2003, Johnson joined Chelsea for a £6 million fee. He made his UEFA Champions League debut that August against Žilina. During his time in London, he contributed to the 2004-05 Premier League title win and the 2005 League Cup victory. His versatility was tested in a match against Newcastle United when he filled the goalkeeper position following a red card. After a loan period at Portsmouth, he departed Chelsea following the 2006-07 season.

Johnson joined Portsmouth permanently in August 2007 for approximately £4 million. He played a central role in the club's 2008 FA Cup campaign, featuring in the 1-0 final victory against Cardiff City. During the 2008-09 season, his performance earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year and a Goal of the Season award for a strike against Hull City. By April 2009, he was recognized as the youngest member on The Times list of the top 50 Portsmouth players.
Liverpool and Retirement
In the summer of 2009, Johnson transferred to Liverpool for a £17.5 million fee. Over six seasons at Anfield, he made 200 appearances and helped the club win the 2012 League Cup. Following his tenure at Liverpool, he moved to Stoke City in July 2015 on a free transfer. He concluded his career after three seasons with Stoke, having accumulated 64 appearances for the club.
International Representation
Johnson served the England national team for over a decade, receiving 54 caps between 2003 and 2014. His international record includes participation in three major tournaments: the 2010 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2012, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
