Glenn Frey emerged from the Detroit rock scene of the 1960s to become a central figure in American music. As a founding member of the Eagles, he balanced roles as a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist. His career spanned decades of chart success, both through collaborative work with his bandmates and as a solo performer during the 1980s.
Early Career in Michigan
Frey was born in Detroit in 1948 and attended Dondero High School and Oakland Community College. Early musical ventures included local bands such as the Subterraneans, The Four of Us, the Mushrooms, and the Heavy Metal Kids. During this period, he established a professional relationship with Bob Seger, contributing background vocals and guitar to the 1968 single, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. Encouraged by Seger, Frey moved toward original songwriting before relocating to Los Angeles.

While in Los Angeles, Frey formed a duo called Longbranch Pennywhistle with JD Souther, releasing an eponymous album in 1969. In 1970, he met Don Henley while both were signed to Amos Records. They were hired as a backup band for Linda Ronstadt, an experience that led them to form the Eagles alongside Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon. Frey functioned as a primary songwriter and lead singer on hits including Take It Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Already Gone, Tequila Sunrise, Lyin' Eyes, New Kid in Town, and Heartache Tonight.
Solo Work and Later Projects
Following the Eagles' hiatus in 1980, Frey pursued a solo career, debuting with the 1982 album No Fun Aloud. He achieved Top 40 success with tracks such as The One You Love, Smuggler's Blues, The Heat Is On, and You Belong to the City. In 1994, the Eagles reunited for the Hell Freezes Over tour and album. Frey continued to perform with the band through the 2007 release of Long Road Out of Eden and the subsequent world tour. His final public appearance with the group occurred in Bossier City, Louisiana, in 2015.
