Early Education and Career Beginnings
Born in Johannesburg on 12 May 1963, Gavin Hood grew up in the Hillbrow area as the son of retailer Gordon Hood. He attended St Stithians College before enrolling at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he earned a law degree. In 1991, he moved to California to pursue post-graduate studies in screenwriting and directing. Upon his return to South Africa, he produced educational dramas for the Department of Health and released his first commercial short, The Storekeeper, in 1998, which earned him an Artes Award.

Hood wrote and co-produced his feature debut, A Reasonable Man, in 1999. His subsequent project was the Polish-language film In Desert and Wilderness, which he took over in 2001. His reputation grew significantly with Tsotsi, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006 alongside its Academy Award win. In 2000, Variety magazine included him in its list of Ten Directors to Watch.
Work in Hollywood and Global Productions
The director shifted toward larger international projects beginning with the 2007 film Rendition for New Line Cinema. He directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, emphasizing the character's internal struggle. In 2013, he oversaw the adaptation of Ender's Game. He later directed and acted in Eye in the Sky, premiered in 2015, and in 2019 he wrote, directed, and executive produced Official Secrets, a film focused on the case of whistleblower Katharine Gun.
