Gautam Adani manages a sprawling multinational conglomerate that operates critical infrastructure across India, ranging from power generation to large-scale port facilities. His business trajectory evolved from humble origins in plastic unit management to overseeing a holding company that fundamentally altered the landscape of domestic energy production and international trade, despite facing severe regulatory and criminal challenges in global jurisdictions.
Early Career and Industrial Expansion
Born in Ahmedabad in 1962, Adani attended Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya before exiting the formal education system at age 16. In 1978, he relocated to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. His professional transition began in 1981 when he managed a plastics factory for his elder brother, Mahasukhbhai Adani. This role introduced him to the polyvinyl chloride import market. In 1988, he founded Adani Exports, now known as Adani Enterprises, which initially focused on agricultural and power commodities. The 1991 economic liberalization policies allowed for diversification into the trade of metals and textiles.

Take the IQ test →Port Operations and Infrastructure
The Adani Group became a major force in logistics following the 1994 managerial outsourcing announcement for the Mundra Port by the Government of Gujarat. After winning the contract in 1995, the firm established its first jetty. Adani Ports & SEZ currently operates as India's largest private multi-port operator. The flagship Mundra Port maintains a cargo handling capacity exceeding 210.150 million tons annually. Complementing these logistics operations, Adani founded Adani Power in 1996, which grew to become the nation's largest private thermal power producer with a capacity of 4620MW.
Diversification and Corporate Controversies
Recent years involved aggressive expansion through acquisitions, including the purchase of Ambuja Cements and ACC in May 2022. The conglomerate also gained control of NDTV by December 2022. These rapid developments occurred alongside significant legal scrutiny. In January 2023, Hindenburg Research alleged stock manipulation and financial irregularities. While the Supreme Court of India dismissed calls for an SIT or CBI inquiry in 2024, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn indicted Adani in November 2024 on five criminal counts of bribery, alleging payments exceeding $250 million to government officials.
