The dissertation titled Some Results on the Minimal Period Problem for Nonlinear Vibrating Strings and Hamiltonian Systems; and on the Number of Solutions for Semilinear Elliptic Equations marked the beginning of Gabriella Tarantello’s research career in 1986. An Italian mathematician, she has since focused her expertise on partial differential equations, differential geometry, and gauge theory.
Academic Foundation
Born in Pratola Peligna in 1958, Tarantello completed her undergraduate degree at the University of L'Aquila in 1982. She transitioned to New York University for graduate studies, attending the Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science. She earned a master's degree in 1984, followed by a Ph.D. in 1986 under the supervision of Louis Nirenberg.

Following her doctoral studies, she held a visiting assistant professorship at the University of California, Berkeley, and conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study. In 1989, she joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University. By 1993, she began her tenure at Tor Vergata University of Rome, followed by a full professorship at the University of Basilicata in 1994, before returning to a permanent position at Tor Vergata in 1995.
Research Publications and Recognition
Tarantello authored the book Selfdual Gauge Field Vortices: An Analytical Approach, published by Birkhäuser in 2008. She also contributed to Geometric Analysis and PDEs, a collection of lectures from the 2007 C.I.M.E. Summer School. In 2014, the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere awarded her the Lucio & Wanda Amerio Gold Medal Prize. She was elected as a member of the Academia Europaea in 2020.
