The doctoral dissertation titled Endliche Rationale Matrixgruppen vom Grad 24 marked the start of Gabriele Nebe’s career as a mathematician in 1995. Focused on the theory of finite matrix groups, this early research laid the foundation for her later contributions to lattices, modular forms, spherical designs, and error-correcting codes within the field of applied mathematics.
Academic Trajectory
Born in Aachen in 1967, Nebe completed her education at RWTH Aachen University, where she obtained her Dr. rer. nat. degree. Her academic supervision during this period was provided by Wilhelm Plesken. Following her doctorate, she held positions at Ulm University between 2000 and 2004 before returning to RWTH Aachen University in 2005 to serve as a professor in the department of mathematics.

Nebe utilizes integral representations of finite groups to develop explicit examples of discrete mathematical structures via computer algebra systems. Her work has led to the construction of extremal even unimodular lattices in 48, 56, and 72 dimensions, as well as an extremal 3-modular lattice in 64 dimensions. These specific structures represent the highest known kissing numbers and the densest sphere packings within their respective dimensions. Notably, her identification of the extremal unimodular lattice in 72 dimensions provided a resolution to a long-standing mathematical problem.
Professional Recognition and Resources
Throughout her career, Nebe has received several honors, including the Friedrich Wilhelm Prize in 1995 and the Merckle Research Prize in 2002. She also held a research fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University during the 2003-2004 academic year. Additionally, she maintains the Online Catalogue of Lattices in collaboration with Neil Sloane, providing a significant resource for the mathematical community.
