Early Life and Exile
Born to Carmen Terán González and Fernando Arrabal Ruiz, his early years were defined by the Spanish Civil War. His father, a military officer who remained loyal to the Second Spanish Republic, was sentenced to death in 1936, a sentence later commuted to imprisonment. His father's eventual disappearance in 1941 left a lasting impact on Arrabal’s trajectory. He moved from Melilla to Ciudad Rodrigo, then to Madrid, eventually studying at the University of Barcelona before relocating permanently to France in 1955.

In 1962, Arrabal co-founded the Panic Movement alongside Alejandro Jodorowsky and Roland Topor. His creative output is vast, spanning over 100 plays and 14 novels, alongside extensive poetry and essays. Beyond the stage, he directed seven full-length feature films, including 'El entierro de la sardina'. His work remains deeply embedded in the surrealist tradition, and he maintains membership in the College of 'Pataphysics, serving as a Transcendent Satrap.
Political Engagement and Recognition
Arrabal gained notoriety for his vocal opposition to the Francoist regime, most famously through his work 'Carta al General Franco'. His political stance, characterized by anarchist leanings, led to a complex relationship with established parties and institutions. His contributions to the arts have been formally recognized with numerous honors, including the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2005, the National Theater Prize in 2001, and the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise in 2019.
