The library of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sassari in Alghero stands as a tribute to Fernando Clemente, an Italian architect whose career spanned the twentieth century. Born in Sassari in 1917, he engaged deeply with the principles of Modernism, ultimately shaping urban environments and academic institutions across Italy until his death in 1998.
Academic Formation and Early Work
Clemente completed his architectural studies at the University of Florence under the instruction of Giovanni Michelucci. His professional trajectory gained momentum during the 1950s when he led the design of several villages in Sardinia, including Masone Pardu, Olia Speciosa, Tottubella, and Uccari. During this same period, he began work on the new and old skyscraper project in his hometown of Sassari, a task that occupied him from 1952 until 1965.

The 1960s marked his transition into academia and large-scale regional planning. He succeeded Michelucci as director of the Institute of Technical Architecture at the University of Bologna. His technical expertise extended to the creation of master plans for major cities such as Pisa, Lucca, Sassari, Florence, and Bologna. He contributed to the development of the Latte Dolce district in Sassari and expanded his focus to institutional structures, including the Faculty of Veterinary in Parma in 1966 and the Faculty of Agrarian Studies in Sassari in 1967.
University Leadership in Cagliari
From 1975 to 1995, Clemente served as the director of the Institute of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cagliari. He subsequently became the first director of the Department of Land Engineering at the same institution. During these years, he managed the complex reconstruction of the Ancona Courthouse, which spanned from 1975 to 1989. His extensive writings on territorial planning and landscape culture solidified his academic legacy in Italy.
