The professional career of Fernando Gago commenced on 5 December 2004, when the defensive midfielder debuted for Boca Juniors in a victory against Quilmes. Over a sixteen-year span, his progression as a deep-lying playmaker was frequently interrupted by severe physical ailments, forcing him to balance high-level club competition with lengthy periods of rehabilitation until his retirement in 2020.
European Tenure and Real Madrid
In December 2006, Gago transferred to Real Madrid on a contract spanning six and a half years for a reported €20 million fee. During his tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu, he featured in 121 matches across all competitions, netting his only goal for the club against Sevilla in 2008. His time in Madrid proved challenging as he struggled to maintain a consistent starting position, particularly under manager José Mourinho, who preferred the partnership of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira. Following a stint at Roma during the 2011–2012 season, where he made 32 appearances, Gago returned to Spain to join Valencia for €3.5 million.

Throughout his career, Gago dealt with recurring injuries that hampered his output. His return to Boca Juniors in 2013 was defined by significant trauma to his Achilles tendons. In September 2015, he exited a match against River Plate after just 24 seconds due to a rupture. He suffered a second identical injury in April 2016. In the 2018 Copa Libertadores final, played in Madrid, Gago sustained a final Achilles tear during extra time after entering the match as a substitute. After joining Vélez Sarsfield in 2019 under manager Gabriel Heinze, he retired from professional play in November 2020.
International Representation
Gago earned his first senior cap for Argentina in February 2007 against France. He participated in three editions of the Copa América in 2007, 2011, and 2015. A notable milestone occurred in 2008 when he secured an Olympic gold medal with the national side in Beijing. He later featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, making his tournament debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Estádio do Maracanã. His international career spanned exactly one decade.
Transition to Management
Upon concluding his playing career, Gago transitioned into coaching within the Argentine Primera División. He took charge of Aldosivi and Racing Club, where he achieved success by securing two super cup honours. His managerial experience has since expanded to his appointment as the head coach of Universidad de Chile.
