Fernando H. Ocampo

Filipino architect and civil engineer

The Manila Cathedral stands as the primary contribution of Fernando H. Ocampo to the architectural landscape of the Philippines. Born on August 7, 1897, in San Fernando, Pampanga, Ocampo established a professional career that bridged the technical requirements of civil engineering with the aesthetic demands of modern architectural design throughout the twentieth century.

Academic Foundation

Ocampo pursued a comprehensive education across three institutions. He obtained his A.B. from Ateneo de Manila University in 1914. His technical training continued at the University of Santo Tomas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1919. He later completed a Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in 1921.

Early Career and Collaboration

After graduating in 1921, Ocampo gained professional experience at the firm Ballinger & Perrot in Philadelphia. This was followed by a two-year period of travel through Europe to study architectural styles. Upon returning to the Philippines, he served for four years as an assistant architect within the Bureau of Public Works. In 1927, he entered a professional partnership with architect Tomas Arguelles, forming the firm Arguelles & Ocampo.

Professional Contributions and Legacy

Ocampo held membership on the Board of Examiners for Architects in 1929 and 1930. He also co-founded the Philippine Institute of Architecture alongside Juan M. Arellano and Andres P. Luna. His teaching tenure included a faculty position at the University of Santo Tomas. Throughout his career, he designed various commercial and residential structures, including the Regina Building, the G.A. CuUnjieng Building, and the Eugenio Lopez, Sr. house in Iloilo City. He died in Manila in 1984.
