Transition to Politics
In December 2003, Poe accepted a nomination to run for president of the Philippines. Representing the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino, he campaigned against the incumbent Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The 2004 election resulted in a narrow defeat, with Poe trailing by approximately one million votes. This event marked the closest margin in the history of Philippine presidential elections.
Legacy and Final Honors
Poe died of a stroke in Quezon City on December 14, 2004. He was buried at the Manila North Cemetery. Following his death, he received the National Artist of the Philippines award in 2006.
