Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the 3rd Duke of Alba, occupied the office of Mayordomo mayor to the Spanish kings for over four decades, serving both Charles I and Philip II. A prominent Castilian nobleman, he became a central figure in European political and military affairs during the sixteenth century, holding high-ranking administrative roles across territories from Milan to the Spanish Netherlands.
Early Military Development
Born in 1507 in Piedrahíta, Fernando entered the military life early, participating in the capture of Fuenterrabía in 1523 at age sixteen. Following the death of his grandfather in 1531, he inherited the title of Duke of Alba. He soon demonstrated his capabilities, including his involvement in the 1535 conquest of Tunis and his command of Spanish forces at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547, where he secured a victory against the German Protestant princes.

In 1541, Charles I appointed him as his Mayordomo mayor, a position he retained until the monarch’s abdication. His commitment to the Habsburg family extended to the education of Prince Philip, whom he accompanied on a diplomatic tour of Europe. He later assisted Philip during his 1554 marriage to Mary I in England. Throughout his life, he remained a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a testament to his status within the royal court.
Administrative and Military Commands
Alba’s administrative career was marked by his tenure as Governor of Milan starting in 1555 and Viceroy of Naples from 1555 to 1558. In 1567, Philip II tasked him with governing the Spanish Netherlands, where he served until 1573. His final years saw a return to favor through his leadership in the Portuguese succession crisis. He was named Viceroy and Constable of Portugal in 1580, titles he held until his death in 1582 in Lisbon.
