Early Career and Television Pioneering
Educated at Colégio Pedro II, Montenegro began her artistic trajectory in theatre with the 1950 production Alegres Canções nas Montanhas. By 1951, she entered television as a pioneer, becoming the first actress hired by TV Tupi. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she participated in numerous teletheater productions and made her telenovela debut in 1954 with A Muralha on RecordTV.

Montenegro achieved significant international recognition for her role as Dora in the 1998 film Central Station, directed by Walter Salles. Her performance earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival. Additionally, she received Best Actress awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review in 1998, followed by a Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro in 2005.
Television Tenure and Honors
Her television career spans various broadcasters, including an tenure at TV Globo starting in 1981. In 2013, she received the International Emmy Award for Best Actress for Sweet Mother. Among her civilian honors, she was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit and the National Order of Merit by the Brazilian government. In 2021, she was elected to seat number 17 at the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
Public Appearances and Record-Setting
Beyond her acting roles, Montenegro participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics opening ceremony by reading poetry. In 2024, Guinness World Records recognized her for hosting the largest philosophy lecture, where she addressed an audience of over 15,000 people at Ibirapuera Park.
