Fatboy Slim

Norman Quentin Cook, professionally known as Fatboy Slim, emerged as a central figure in the 1990s big beat electronic movement. Born in 1963 in the London Borough of Bromley, the musician transitioned from an indie rock bassist to a high-profile producer, blending eclectic samples, rhythmic processing, and pop-oriented structures that defined the global dance sound.

Early Career and The Housemartins

Educated at Reigate Grammar School and the University of Brighton, Cook initially sought success in indie rock. He joined The Housemartins in 1985, contributing to their 1986 UK number-one hit, a cover of Caravan of Love. Despite this success, Cook felt unsuited to mainstream pop, finding more inspiration in hip-hop production and the technical potential of mixing equipment.

Electronic Evolution and Collaborations

Following the dissolution of The Housemartins, Cook returned to Brighton to focus on dance music. He founded the collective Beats International, which achieved a number-one single with Dub Be Good to Me in 1990. Throughout the early 1990s, he operated under various aliases including Pizzaman and the Mighty Dub Katz, while also forming the acid jazz band Freak Power.

Success as Fatboy Slim

The debut Fatboy Slim album, Better Living Through Chemistry, arrived in 1996. Its successor, the 1998 platinum-certified You've Come a Long Way, Baby, established him globally with hits like The Rockafeller Skank and Praise You. His later career included collaborations with David Byrne on the concept album Here Lies Love, which was adapted for the stage in 2013.
