Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed served as the fifth President of India, holding office from 1974 until his death in 1977. Education and Legal Practice
Born in Old Delhi in 1905, Ahmed pursued higher education at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He earned his history tripos in 1927 and was called to the bar from the Inner Temple in London by 1928. Upon returning to India, he practiced law in Lahore and later in Guwahati, where he served as a junior lawyer and eventually the Advocate General of Assam.

Ahmed joined the Indian National Congress in 1931, rising through various committees to become a finance minister in the provincial government led by Gopinath Bordoloi in 1938. During his term, he implemented taxes on agricultural income and amusements to address state deficits. His participation in the Quit India Movement led to his imprisonment in Jorhat for three years starting in 1942.
National Political Ascendance
After holding various ministerial portfolios in Assam throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including finance and law, Ahmed entered national politics. He served as a member of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. In 1966, he was appointed to the central cabinet, overseeing departments such as agriculture, industries, and power before his elevation to the presidency in 1974.
Presidential Tenure and Death
The presidency of Ahmed was marked by his support for constitutional amendments and the imposition of the Emergency. These actions drew significant scrutiny and public caricature. He died of a heart attack in New Delhi on 11 February 1977. He remains one of the few Indian heads of state to pass away while in office and was buried in a mosque near Parliament House.
