Academic Background
Born in Rob Nagorkandi, Munshiganj, in 1940, Ahmed completed his early education at Mathbaria High School and Dhaka College. He attended the University of Dhaka, where he graduated with a BA and an MA in economics. He earned a master's degree in development economics from Williams College and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1975, focusing his doctoral dissertation on multisector modeling.

Ahmed entered the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1963, serving in various administrative roles across Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Mymensingh. After Bangladesh gained independence, he held positions in the Ministry of Finance. In 1978, he transitioned to the World Bank, where he remained for twenty years. He later served as the eighth governor of Bangladesh Bank from October 2001 to April 2005 and subsequently managed the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation.

On 12 January 2007, President Iajuddin Ahmed swore in Fakhruddin Ahmed as chief adviser. His administration focused on curbing national instability and addressing systemic corruption, leading to the arrest of over 160 individuals, including senior politicians, civil servants, and security officials. This caretaker tenure lasted nearly two years, concluding following the national elections held on 29 December 2008.
