Duhalde became vice president of Argentina in 1989 alongside Carlos Menem. By 1991, he resigned this role to successfully run for governor of Buenos Aires Province, a position he retained until 1999. His tenure as governor involved navigating complex constitutional reforms and provincial referendums to secure his re-election in 1995.
Presidency Amidst Crisis
Following the economic instability and the resignation of Fernando de la Rúa, Congress appointed Duhalde as president on 2 January 2002. His administration focused on managing a significant currency devaluation to foster economic recovery. After completing his term in 2003, he served as president of the Commission of Permanent Representatives of Mercosur until 2005.
Political Legacy and Honors
Beyond his domestic appointments, Duhalde received international recognition, including the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru and the Medal of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in 2003.
