Academic Foundation and Research
Born in Castlebar in 1946, MacHale pursued his initial mathematical training at the University of Galway, earning a BSc and MSc by 1968. He completed his doctoral studies at Keele University in 1972 under the supervision of Hans Liebeck. His professional career centred on University College Cork, where his research concentrated on group and ring theory, specifically focusing on the properties of Boolean rings.

MacHale produced the first book-length biography of the mathematician George Boole in 1985. His commitment to this subject continued for decades, culminating in the 2014 publication of a revised, expanded volume titled The Life and Work of George Boole: A Prelude to the Digital Age. In 2018, he collaborated with Yvonne Cohen to release New Light on George Boole. The university recognised his contributions to this field by awarding him an honorary doctorate of literature on 2 November 2015.
Mathematics and Public Engagement
Beyond formal research, MacHale facilitated public engagement with mathematics through the Superbrain Competition, which he directed at University College Cork from 1984 until 2007. He designed the Irish Mathematical Society logo and received the inaugural Raising Public Awareness of Maths award from Maths Week Ireland in 2016. Furthermore, he served as a member of the Royal Irish Academy starting in 2026.
Writings on Humour and Puzzles
MacHale authored over 30 volumes concerning humour, including Comic Sections: The Book of Mathematical Jokes, Humour, Wit and Wisdom. His interest in cognitive challenges led to a long-term writing partnership with Paul Sloane, resulting in more than a dozen books of lateral thinking puzzles. He also wrote several books analyzing the 1952 film, The Quiet Man, and maintained an active role within the Irish Association of Non-Smokers.
