A single Mosin-Nagant rifle served as the final gift from Vladimir Arsenyev to the Nanai hunter Dersu Uzala in the spring of 1908. This departure marked the end of a relationship formed in the Ussuri krai, where the local trapper had become an essential guide for Russian expeditions charting the Okhotsk-Manchurian taiga.
Service as an Expedition Guide
Starting in 1902, Vladimir Arsenyev conducted multiple surveying missions throughout the Russian Far East. During these expeditions, he enlisted the expertise of the local hunter to navigate the dense Siberian forests. Uzala provided critical support by interpreting the environment and documenting various regional flora species for the research team. His skill set earned him the respect of the entire party during their long-range field travels.

Take the IQ test →Transition to Urban Life and Departure
As Uzala advanced in age, his physical senses began to decline, prompting Arsenyev to invite him to live in the city. The transition proved incompatible with the hunter's lifelong reliance on natural resources and traditional practices. Regulations within the city limits strictly prohibited him from building huts, lighting fires, or discharging firearms for hunting. Finding these constraints impossible to navigate, he secured permission to return to the forest in 1908, where he was murdered shortly after.
Posthumous Cultural Recognition
Arsenyev published an account of his travels in 1923, titled Dersu Uzala, also distributed as With Dersu the Hunter and Dersu the Trapper. The narrative inspired two feature films, the first by Agasi Babayan in 1961 and the second by Akira Kurosawa in 1975, which earned an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1972, the village of Laulyu in the Krasnoarmeysky District was renamed Dersu. The scientific community also recognized the guide by naming the asteroid 4142 Dersu-Uzala in 1981.
