Deresse Mekonnen

Ethiopian middle-distance runner and world champion

The Ethiopian national record for the mile run belongs to Deresse Mekonnen, who established the mark of 3:48.95 in 2009. Born on 20 October 1987 in Sheno, Oromia Region, he emerged as a consistent performer on the global stage, earning distinction as a two-time world indoor champion and a primary competitor in the 1500-metre event.

Early Career and Initial Success

Mekonnen started his professional athletics career with an appearance at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, where he placed 11th during the opening heats. His trajectory shifted at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia. Although officials initially disqualified him for a lane violation after he crossed the finish line first in the 1500 metres, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation successfully appealed the decision, confirming his gold medal victory.

International Competition and Olympic Participation

Following his indoor success in 2008, Mekonnen competed at the Beijing Olympics, exiting the 1500-metre competition during the semi-finals. He returned to the international spotlight at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, where he secured a silver medal. This performance made him the first athlete from Ethiopia to earn a medal in that specific event at a World Championship, finishing behind winner Yusuf Saad Kamel.

Consolidation of Titles and Indoor Mastery

The 2010 season focused on defending his indoor title. After setting an indoor personal best of 3:33.10 at the Aviva Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham, he entered the IAAF World Indoor Championships. By defeating Abdalaati Iguider, Mekonnen became the first athlete to win back-to-back 1500-metre indoor titles since Hicham El Guerrouj. Despite a six-month break caused by stomach issues, he returned in January 2011 to win the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games, ending the six-year win streak held by Bernard Lagat.
