Denis Shapovalov

Achieving a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 10 on September 21, 2020, Denis Shapovalov established himself as a prominent figure in professional tennis. Born in 1999 in Tel Aviv to a mother of Ukrainian-Jewish descent and a father of Russian Orthodox background, he relocated to Canada before his first birthday and developed his aggressive, left-handed game in Vaughan, Ontario.

Early Development and Junior Success

Shapovalov began tennis training at age five at the Richmond Hill Country Club, eventually moving to his mother Tessa's academy, TessaTennis. By age 13, his family hired coach Adriano Fuorivia to manage his development. His junior career was highlighted by a victory in the 2016 Wimbledon Junior Singles title and a 2015 US Open Junior Doubles championship alongside Félix Auger-Aliassime. He also helped Canada secure its first Junior Davis Cup title in 2015.

Transition to the Professional Circuit

In 2017, Shapovalov made a significant impact by reaching the semi-finals of the Canadian Open at age 18, becoming the youngest player to reach the semi-final of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. His performance that year earned him the ATP Most Improved Player and Star of Tomorrow awards, alongside the Lionel Conacher Award as Canada's male athlete of the year. He continued his progression in 2019 by winning his first ATP singles title at the Stockholm Open.

ATP Tour and Grand Slam Performance

Shapovalov plays a high-risk, aggressive style characterized by a powerful forehand and a one-handed backhand. His best Grand Slam finish occurred at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, where he reached the semi-finals. In doubles, he has partnered with Rohan Bopanna, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2020 US Open and achieving a career-high doubles ranking of No. 44 in February 2020.
