Born in 1952 in Marseille, Ranque studied at École polytechnique and Mines ParisTech. He began his professional path in 1976 as an engineer with the Corps des mines at the Ministry of Industry, focusing on energy. By 1983, he transitioned to the private sector, joining Thomson-CSF. During the 1980s, he managed space affairs and microwave tubes divisions. In 1998, Ranque became chairman and chief executive officer of Thomson-CSF, overseeing the company's rebranding to Thales in 2000. He remained in this position for over a decade. In 2008, his compensation reached €1.8 million. His tenure concluded in May 2009 following disagreements regarding the entry of Dassault Aviation as a core industrial shareholder, which created significant pressure for his resignation.
